If you’re in the market for an affordable SUV, then you should be looking at Acura’s SUVs. And, why not? They are reliable, capable, and are filled with a lot of tech-savvy features. But did you know that they are also fuel-efficient as well?

Over the years, Acura has come up with some handy ways to make its SUVs more efficient so that you don’t have to worry about finding a filling station every hundred miles on your next road trip.

As Acura’s first three-row hybrid SUV offering, the MDX Sport Hybrid offers ample seating for up to seven passengers and a hybrid powertrain that’s both powerful and fuel-efficient. Inside the cabin, you’ll find a comfortable interior adorned in Milano premium leather, heated and ventilated front seats, second-row captain’s chairs, and tri-zone climate control.

And underneath the vehicle, you’ll see a 3.5-litre V6 engine that’s mated to a three-motor hybrid setup that powers all four wheels. This sophisticated hybrid system has a combined horsepower output of 321 and it makes 289 lb-ft of torque but, best of all, it can also achieve up to an EPA-estimated 26 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Not bad for a luxury family vehicle.

  1. The Acura RDX

If you’re looking for a sporty crossover with an added dose of luxury, then the Acura RDX is arguably one of the best picks on the market. With an aggressive stance and an extra-sporty A-Spec trim level, the RDX’s athleticism which you wouldn’t expect from an SUV is complemented by an eager and fuel-efficient engine.

Underneath the vehicle is a turbocharged 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine that produces 272 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a ten-speed automatic transmission. The setup is very lively and really gets the car moving, but the best part about it is that it can return an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway in front-wheel-drive form. Opting for all-wheel-drive will drop both of those figures by one mpg.

In case you don’t want to spend the extra money for the MDX Sport Hybrid, you can always opt for the regular MDX model. It comes with a naturally aspirated 3.5-litre V6 that produces 290 hp and 267 lb-ft and can achieve up to 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway according to the EPA in its front-drive format. The MDX is also offered with the brand’s Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive system, which will net you one less mpg on each figure.

Conclusion

Acura has come a long way in making some of the most reliable and sporty SUVs on the market and the fuel economy that they are able to achieve is impressive. While they might not achieve a perfect 30 mpg, they all come very close and are still better than competitors from other brands.
