Toyota has finally revealed the new Land Cruiser for the Nigeria market and it’s official, it isn’t on the same longer TNGA-F platform we find on the LX and global market Land Cruiser. This new Land Cruiser is essentially the “2024 Land Cruiser Prado”, revealed first as the 2024 GX. So what’s new? Well, it will start in the mid 41.5 million naira range and bears the codename J250.
Under the hood, we find a Turbo 4-cylinder hybrid making 326HP and 465 lb-ft of torque. This is paired with an 8-speed auto, a 2 speed transfer case and a full-time 4WD. It has 8.7in of ground clearance as well along with an automatic limited slip center diff and locking rear diff.
The design from the side is nearly identical to the new GX as they (almost) are the same vehicle, though the rest is a mixed bag. Here blocky shape with circular headlights. These come on the 1958 trim and the First Edition. Outback isn’t a light bar but a traditional design. Many of the SUV’s crucial underbody components are tucked up within the frame rails, which will help it scramble over rocks and obstacles without dragging too much. It will only be sold with 5 seater too with a tech-laden interior.
Toyota has announced that the starting price for their new Land Cruiser model will be in the mid-41.5 million naira ($50,000) range, but they haven’t released all the details yet. This is significantly less than the 72.2 million naira ($87,030) minimum cost of entry for the discontinued 2021 Land Cruiser. Toyota is hoping that this more affordable price point will increase sales, as they have typically only sold 3000 to 4000 units per year over the past decade.
While Toyota hasn’t disclosed how much they expect sales to increase, they do plan to sell all 5000 First Edition examples within the first three months. This is a significant increase from their sales in recent years and indicates a promising start for the new model. After the First Editions are sold, production will shift to the less expensive base Land Cruiser 1958 and the simply named Land Cruiser variant.
