The Nigeria Police has recently launched an online platform called the Central Motor Registry Information System (CMRIS) to simplify and improve the management of vehicle information. The platform allows vehicle owners to register their vehicles and obtain a Motor Vehicle Information Certificate. This initiative aims to centralise information on vehicles that are being used on Nigerian roads, which will help in investigating vehicle thefts and speeding up the vehicle recovery process.

In Nigeria, it is compulsory to process CMR for every vehicle registered. CMR stands for Central Motor Registry which was kind of manually handled by the Nigeria Police Force.

But at a point, the processing of CMR was temporarily suspended for reviews after which it was later resumed and announced as Central Motor Registry Information System (CMRIS). It is now compulsory for every vehicle in Nigeria to have CMRIS which can be easily gotten online through https://cmris.npf.gov.ng, an online portal created by the Nigeria Police Force.

To get started as an individual, you need to have your NIN, allocation of plate number, email address, phone number attached to NIN, vehicle registration number, chassis number, engine number, the vehicle colour, year of manufacture, model, make of the vehicle, place of birth, state of origin, etc. As a company, CAC and other necessary things they will need are required.

About CMRIS

One of the duties of the Nigeria Police Force is to protect the lives and property of all persons in Nigeria. In carrying out this responsibility about motor vehicle security, the Police established a Central Motor Registry (CMR) as a repository of information on vehicles operating on Nigerian roads. Every motor vehicle (cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, etc) owner is required to register the motor vehicle in the Registry and issue a Motor Vehicle Information Certificate.

This portal is designed to enable motor vehicle owners to comply with regulatory requirements by providing information online about their vehicles, their ownership and other necessary details that will support the Police in maintaining information on vehicles. This will be very useful in the investigation of motor vehicle theft and recovery processes.

Registration Requirements

Before initiating the registration process, ensure you have the following information readily available:

  • Vehicle Registration Number
  • Chassis Number
  • Engine Number
  • Vehicle Color
  • Vehicle Model
  • Product Information
  • Email Address
  • Phone Number
  • National Identification Number (NIN)

Steps to Register on CMRIS

  1. Get Started: Click on the “Get Started” option on the CMRIS website.
  2. Create or Log In to Profile: Create a new profile using your NIN, Driver’s License, or Tax Identification Number (TIN). If you have an existing profile, simply log in.
  3. Access CMR Requests: Once logged in, navigate to the CMR Requests section.
  4. Provide Vehicle Details: Input all the required vehicle information accurately into the provided fields.
  5. Confirm Submitted Details: Review and confirm the accuracy of the information submitted.
  6. Make Payment: Complete the registration process by making the required payment through the platform.
  7. Verify Contact Information: Post registration, verify your email address and phone number. This step ensures accurate communication channels.
  8. Access CMR Portal: Upon successful verification, gain access to the CMR portal. Here, you can view comprehensive information about your registered vehicle, including its registration status and insurance status.

By following these steps, vehicle owners can seamlessly register their vehicles on the CMRIS platform, ensuring compliance with regulations and facilitating efficient vehicle information management for law enforcement purposes, Once you are done, the certificate will be sent to the email you provided and you can then print it out.
