The growth of technology in the automobile industry would suggest that newer vehicles are now gaining more gas mileage than older ones. But, it comes as a surprise that there are many old model vehicles that have better fuel mileage than the new ones.

For instance, some 80s and 90s vehicles could achieve 50 mpg without even having a hybrid powertrain or any electric component. If that’s the case, why are new vehicles with all these technological advancements still can’t get the same fuel efficiency?

Examples Of Old Model Cars With Great Fuel Mileage?

There are older cars with better fuel mileage than most new vehicles. An instance is the 1963 Chevy Corvair coupe that achieves 30 mpg on the highway. Another vehicle is the 1978 Ford Fairmont sedan which averages 29 mpg.

Even the popular 1967 Volkswagen Beetle with the iconic rounded body and the small engine still has an exceptional fuel efficiency of 32 mpg on the highway.

Many cars from the 80s and 90s also have great fuel efficiency. Another is the Honda CRX which achieves 52 mpg.

These vehicles might lack modern features like advanced technology and driver-assist safety features. But, in fuel efficiency and affordability, they are better than new cars.

So, how could they achieve that?

The reason most old model cars have better fuel mileage than new cars is they are lighter and smaller than modern cars. In addition, they have less powerful engines, which means the engine burns less fuel.

Conclusion

Modern cars are heavier than older cars. They have larger and more powerful engines. They also have additional stability and safety features, which they use to make up for their average fuel efficiency.
