The Corolla and Camry are two sister vehicles from the well-known Japanese company, Toyota. Both vehicles are popular across the globe with them consistently top the chart on some of the best vehicles sold year after year. Over time, the Toyota Camry and Corolla have gained the reputation as some of the best vehicles ever produced by Toyota. In Nigeria for instance, these two sedans continue to dominate the Nigerian automobile scene.

It’s almost impossible to not find these two vehicles on Nigerian roads daily. While these two Toyota vehicles are owned and driven interchangeably in Nigeria. Despite their similarities, they quite differ from each other.

Pros of the Toyota Camry Over the Toyota Corolla

Here’s a breakdown of some of the Camry’s pros over the Corolla. They include:

1. The Toyota Camry has a Bigger Body Than the Corolla

The Camry may have the Corolla beat when it comes to sheer passenger space, but the Corolla has something its bigger sibling doesn’t. If you want something a little funkier than the Corolla in its standard form, you can get it as a hatchback. That not only makes it more distinctive, but it also increases the Corolla’s cargo space from 13.1 to a maximum of 23 cubic feet.

2. The Toyota Camry has a Better Powertrain and Fuel Economy than the Corolla

The Camry starts with a larger 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic. Output depends on how the engine transfers its power to the road. Front-wheel drive Camrys get 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Those with all-wheel drive aren’t far behind with respective figures of 202 and 182. Front- and all-wheel-drive XSE models produce marginally higher numbers. 

Toyota also offers the Camry with a 3.5-litre V6 that produces 301 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. The catch is that it only routes its power through the front wheels and an eight-speed automatic. 

Opting for the four-cylinder engine pays off in terms of fuel economy, which can go as high as 28 cities, 39 highways, and 32 combined mpg. The V6 is thirstier but still manages to deliver up to 26 combined and 33 highway mpg.

A combination of the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, an 88-kW electric motor, and a lithium-ion battery pack provides the Camry Hybrid with 208 net horsepower – and a combined fuel economy figure as high as 52 mpg.

3. The Toyota Camry Has a Slightly Better Safety System than the Corolla

Despite the Camry and Corolla making use of the Star Safety System, the Camry seem to have a slight advantage over the Corolla. The Camry has a slightly different 2.5 version of TSS, which makes Lane Tracing Assist standard across the board of regular and Hybrid models. Most gas-only Camry variants benefit from Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, but all of the Camry Hybrid’s trim levels come with it at no additional charge.

On the other hand, Corollas are equipped with TSS 2.0, which adds features such as automatic high beams, Pre-Collison System with Pedestrian Detection, and Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist to all trim levels; other features depend on which grade you select. 

4. The Toyota Camry Has Better Performance Compared to the Corolla

Despite Toyota offering a wide range of Camry and Corolla trims with different levels of performance, the Camry still has something ahead of the Corolla. For the Camry’s performance, Toyota worked with its crew at the Toyota Racing Development. Their appropriately named creation, the Camry TRD, brings aggressive style to the midsize sedan segment with its red-striped body kit and eye-catching rear spoiler. It has the hardware to back up those looks, too. TRD lowered the Camry by 0.6 inches on a set of special coil springs, installed underbody braces to increase rigidity, and swapped out the standard shocks for TRD-spec replacements. Nineteen-inch alloys and P235/40 tires connect the most athletic Camry yet to the road.

On the other hand, only the Corolla Apex Edition trim has a performance that comes close to the Camry. The Corolla Apex Edition rocks a black and bronze body kit and a set of lightweight black 18-inch wheels that can be paired with summer performance tires. Not only does it look different from other Corollas, it also sounds different, thanks to its sport-tuned exhaust.

Cons of the Toyota Camry Over the Corolla

While the Camry has its pros over the Corolla, it also has a bit of con over the Corolla as well. They include:

1. The Corolla is More Portable than the Camry

If you want a portable-sized sedan, then you’ll be going for the Corolla. The Corolla body is smaller in comparison to the Camry. It’s a perfect vehicle for those who love the Camry but need something smaller to drive around.

2. The Corolla is Affordable Compared to the Camry

In terms of affordability, you should be going for the Corolla because it is cheaper than the Camry. The Camry is quite expensive, making it hard for most buyers to afford. This explains why Corolla are more rampant in Nigeria–because they are the cheaper of the two sedans.
