President Bola Tinubu has banned members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) from purchasing petrol vehicles. Instead, he has ordered the compulsory procurement of compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles by all government ministries, departments, and agencies.
Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, released a statement on Monday, indicating that the directive was in line with Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring energy security, reducing fuel expenses, and driving utility.
The statement also noted that CNG-powered vehicles are regarded as a more affordable and cleaner alternative for Nigerian consumers, as they produce lower emissions.
At the Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Tinubu addressed members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), emphasizing that his administration’s energy reforms would not be reversed.
He said, “This nation will not progress forward if we continue to dance on the same spot. We have the will to drive the implementation of CNG adoption across the country, and we must set the example as public officials in leading the way to that prosperous future that we are working to achieve for our people. It starts with us, and in seeing that we are serious, Nigerians will follow our lead.”
The President also directed the rejection of memos brought by FEC members seeking the purchase of traditional petrol-dependent cars. He tasked the affected members to procure CNG-compliant vehicles that provide value for money.
