New Changes on Public Transportation Cost as GIG, Ekeson, and Co Announces New Price List Ahead of Christmas Season

  • Transport companies in Nigeria have already updated their price list ahead of the Christmas travels.
  • The transport fare prices of these companies have doubled due to the increased price of fuel + the holiday season.

According to reports by the National Bureau of Statistics, transportation fares have increased by 75% following the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu on the 19th of May, 2023.

This is coming shortly after the President removed fuel subsidy, causing a serious hike in the price of fuel, and the subsequent increase in transportation costs. Since the fuel subsidy was removed, the price of public transportation in Nigeria has doubled.

With the retail price of petrol in Nigeria between N630.63 to N690, this has led to a serious increase in the cost of public transportation in the country. While states like Lagos, Oyo, and Delta pay N590.95 to N610.38 for petrol, in the East, the price of fuel is about N680 and above.

Following this increase, public transportation companies in Nigeria are already reviewing their prices to reflect the high cost of gasoline and the increased patronage that usually comes from travelers during the Christmas period.

However, it seems like many Nigerians might not be able to travel this Christmas due to the high cost of transport fares caused by the rise in petrol and diesel prices.

Before the removal of the subsidy, transportation from Lagos to Onitsha was about ₦24,300 with GIGm. Between June and August, transporters charged N13,000 due to low patronage and demand. However, transport companies note that prices will rise by over 50% this Christmas season due to increased demand. As such, companies like God Is Good Transport, Ekeson Transport, and many others are already adjusting their prices.

Here’s a current breakdown of their prices:

  • Lagos-Owerri (N27,800)
  • Lagos-Akwa Ibom (N29,300)
