Overview of the 2021 Toyota Corolla

The 2021 Toyota Corolla comes with an added limited-production Special Edition to the 2021 Corolla hatchback lineup. Only 1500 copies will be produced and they feature an exclusive body kit and Supersonic Red paint. Every Corolla hatchback also adds rear-seat-mounted side airbags, which bring the car’s total to 10. Its cargo volume can also be expanded by 6 cubic feet (23 total) with a new no-cost option that deletes the spare tire and adds a tire-repair kit. The sedan also adds a limited-production trim level called the Apex Edition.

With the shift in demand toward crossover SUVs, Toyota has decided to invest in a full redesign of the Corolla for the 2020 model year, bringing an all-new platform, many standard advanced safety features, and even a new hybrid variant. Toyota redesigned the Corolla last year, giving this typically competent but dull small sedan a much-needed upgrade. The new Corolla gained a considerable amount of style without losing the high levels of comfort and efficiency it’s known for.

The 2021 Toyota Corolla comes in either sedan or hatchback form. The hatchback was new in 2019; the new sedan emerged for this model year. Dimensions have changed only modestly, but the new 2020 Corolla sedan is wider and longer, and all Corollas come with extensive safety technology.

Sedans come in L, LE, SE, XLE, and XSE trim levels, along with the new LE Hybrid. Hatchbacks come in SE and XSE guise. Sportier SE and XSE sedans are fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels, a chin spoiler, and aero-stabilizing fins.

Three distinct powertrains are now available. All Corolla hatchbacks are powered by the 2.0-litre inline-4, which makes 169 horsepower and 159 pound-feet of torque. Either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) may be installed. The CVT incorporates a “launch” ratio for quicker take-offs. SE and XSE sedans also get the 2.0-litre engine. Ford Focus and Chevrolet seem to be the major competitors slated to be discontinued as manufacturers take firm steps to build models consumers are buying in greater numbers.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Toyota Corolla Hatchback

The first thing that sets the Toyota Corolla hatchback apart from the sedan is its styling. The front portion of the car looks the same as the sedan, but with the classic hatchback rounded gate, the Corolla takes a whole new look when you get to the back. And that gate design gives the car its best feature, which is more cargo space.

This model typically offers 17.8 cubic feet of storage, which is a little over four cubic feet more than the sedan. However, the 2021 Corolla hatchback offers the chance to delete the spare tire and receive a repair kit instead. This lowers the trunk floor and offers 23 cubic feet of space instead.

However, this model’s most obvious weakness is the rear seat. While the hatchback excels in cargo space, it disappoints with its 29.9 inches of legroom. The sedan is almost five inches more. The only other drawback with the hatchback is that it doesn’t come in a hybrid option as the sedan offers.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the 2021 Toyota Corolla Sedan

What the 2021 Toyota Corolla sedan lacks in exterior styling, it makes up for in interior space. With 34.8 inches of legroom in the rear seats, this model is much more comfortable than the hatchback for long-distance travelling. The cargo space isn’t exactly exciting, but it does a decent job with sizable storage.

The sedan’s fuel economy is impressive. It boasts 40 mpg on the highway. And the hatchback gets around 38 mpg. But the hybrid sedan can get 52 mpg on the highway. Its 1.8-litre, four-cylinder engine produces only 139 hp. There’s also a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder option that generates 169 hp.

Each model offers its benefits, so which one should you choose? To decide, you need to know the features that are the most important to you. For example, if you’re looking for more spacious cargo, the hatchback is your best bet. It can get up to four cubic feet more than the sedan and almost 10 cubic feet more when you remove the spare tire.

If fuel economy is a must for you, the sedan is the better choice. The regular model gets two miles per gallon more than the hatchback on the highway. And the hybrid sedan gets a 14 mpg more than the hatchback.

The sedan offers more desirable standard features than the hatchback. So you’re getting more value for the money if you ditch the hatchback for the sedan.
