Over 21,438 Vehicles Failed Roadworthiness Test Abuja this 2022, Prosecuted around 1,120 traffic offenders

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) suggested on Friday that 21,438 automobiles in Abuja failed a roadworthiness test between January and November 2022. Furthermore, it was said that a Magistrate in a Mobile Court prosecuted around 1,120 traffic offenders.

This surprising number, it said, was obtained as a result of the cars’ rigorous inspection at the Computerized Vehicle Inspection Centers.

FCTA Secretary of Transportation Abdullahi Candido hinted at this during the annual news conference on Friday, noting that just 16,198 of the 37,572 cars inspected were judged worthy.

Candido attributed the high failure rate to the country’s infrequent importation of “Tokunbo,” or decently used vehicles.

He added that the majority of these automobiles were given facelifts by their original owners after being involved in an accident or floods in their own nations.

While acknowledging that a poor road network within the suburbs and a poor maintenance culture contribute significantly to the failure of these vehicles, he revealed that the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has been mandated to subject all vehicles to the Computerised test prior to the renewal of car documents.

According to documents received by the reporter, 3,532 out of 54,620 applicants for a driver’s license were denied because they failed the exam.
