It’s no longer news that the removal of fuel subsidies in over three months has sent the price of fuel skyrocketing, causing fuel purchase a priced commodity most average Nigerians cannot afford comfortably.
There have been several speculations on the exact amount Nigerians who can still afford to buy fuel for their vehicles spend weekly and monthly. To learn more about the current cost of fuel consumption for various cars and car owners, Carmart conducted a survey online asking Nigerians how much they invest into fueling their cars weekly.
The survey had a lot of interesting responses. Before going ahead to share some of the interesting responses, note that if you are looking for a fuel-efficient used car, some of the responses from this survey will give you an idea of cars that will not cost you an arm and a leg to fuel today.
Here are some of the interesting responses:
Atak Chelsea said: “My 2.4LT Hyundai Tucson consumes 15k daily on an average of 85 to 100km.”
Ben Oyibo Yakubu added: “I used 7 litres per week to cover an average distance of 14 km per day on my Nissan Almera Tino.”
Apple Estates & Motors Global Enterprises said: “7k for Volkswagen Passat 2.0lt engine car. It doesn’t eat fuel at all.”
Someone replied to Apple Estate & Motors Global Enterprises comment saying: “No be lie. I run that car in 2015 from Lagos to IMO state with fuel tank use AC, yet when I get to Owerri, is still on a half tank.”
Apple Estate responded: “Very nice car and low fuel consumption.”
Alabi Opeyemi Ayodeji commented: “Mine is 35k a week for 3 days office in a week, other 2 days work from home or training.”
Alabi Opeyemi Ayodeji further explained:
I spend about 150-180k a month for fuel. Another 60k a month to fuel Gen every evening 6:49pm to 12pm when I get home everyday. Weekend when I and family are at home is not part if it o, cos I do ON G n Day and Sunday morning till evening to at least make my family happy and watch whatever they wanna watch. That is around 280-300k a month, feeding, rent and schl fees is excluded o. Na now I know say I be man. Before I no dey see am say I dey do anything. For me to still cope after this stretch, I salute myself. Though am considering doing Solar Power but the whole thing no dey gather together.
It’s now that I pity the jobless, lazy and those with 30k -100k salary. I can cope but I can tell u that they can never cope. My parents (mother) is there with her feeding and drubgs o,thank God I also have a wife who is supportive and I will worship her to any length, she never left me alone in this. When I am broke, I collect without paying back. She overlooks cos she knows when my back is against the wall.

The responses from various users show that while the cost of fuel has increased and has impacted many Nigerians, the cost of fuel your vehicle consumes weekly/monthly is dependent on the type of car you use. Interestingly, from the responses, the Volkswagen Passat consumes less fuel and is a good car if you want to reduce your weekly cost of fuel consumption in Nigeria.
