According to a New York interview with the Nigerian News Agency, the Minister of State for Works and Housing, Mu’azu Sambo, revealed that the Lagos-Ibadan expressway will open next month.

According to Sambo, he also noted that the Second Niger Bridge would be inaugurated in October.

Earlier on, President Buhari announced that the Second Niger Bridge, the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, and other significant projects funded by the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund (PIDF) will be completed by 2023.

In an announcement from last month, the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, noted that the Second Niger Bridge was already 91 per cent ready.

Still in the interview, Sambo also noted that between November 25 and December 21, 2021, the president handed over 941 kilometres of road projects to connect 10 states in five geopolitical zones.

In the interview, he says, “the Second Niger Bridge that has eluded every administration will be commissioned in October by President Muhammadu Buhari and Lagos-Ibadan Highway that has deferred previous administrations will be commissioned in June.

“President Buhari clearly understands the necessity to invest in infrastructure, not just to support a growing population but as an economic driver.

“It is, therefore, not surprising that, through the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, we are managing over 1,019 contracts involving 958 bridges and road projects.”

The Minister, Sambo, also hinted that the federal government is building dwellings in 34 states across the country, estimating around 6,000 housing units.

He continued, “Infrastructure is the backbone of progress because it encompasses all aspects of life.”
