Following the death of the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II, who died at age 96, the world has recounted several histories during her reign.
In the entire British history, she was the longest-reigning monarch. One of the things many didn’t know about her was her love for cars and the fact that she served as a WWII ambulance driver.
At age 18, Princess Elizabeth joined the British military, serving in the Women’s Auxiliary Territory Services during WWII.
She was the first woman from the Royal family to ever serve in the military.
During her service, she drove army ambulances and worked on military trucks.
For this reason, the British public loved her for putting her hand up for military duty and greatly respected her interest in machinery.
As a result, she was given the name “Princess Auto Mechanic.”
Stories about her time in the military have surfaced on the internet following her death. One read,
“During an air raid on London during WWII, a vehicle suffered a flat. My father rushed out, opened the door, carried the young female driver to the safety of an alley, and then changed the tire.
“As she drove away, his mates said, ‘that was the bloody princess!’. John Whitman said.
She loved vehicles and driving. Even as queen, she was constantly pictured behind the wheel of her many cars.
Last year, at age 95, the Queen was pictured in her iconic headscarf and sunglasses behind her Jaguar estate car wheel just days after she was released from the hospital.
Surprisingly, she loved cars and drove without a driver’s license because the Queen didn’t need one. She also never took a driving test and was the only person allowed to drive publicly without a plate number on her state car.
The Queen didn’t just love driving; she loved cars.
