Utilizing electronic ink technology, the car’s exterior can be transformed into various patterns of grey and white, with future models expanding the colour spectrum. The colour change can be controlled through a phone app or potentially by hand gestures, allowing drivers to adapt the car’s appearance based on weather conditions and desired effects such as reflecting or absorbing sunlight.

The BMW Flow electric SUV concept can change colours at the touch of a button. It can change from white to grey or black and back again in a matter of seconds. While it can’t go beyond the grayscale tab, and even then, it lacks the subtlety and depth of real car paint, the effect is stunning and mind-blowing.

There is no need for paint at all because the effect is not achieved through that, but rather with specially formed wrapping cut to fit the SUV’s body panels. The wrapping uses the same electronic ink technology that is used in electronic readers. The coloured panels were precisely cut to match the shape of the SUV’s body panels, and electric wiring was then attached to each section.
