The rate of car accidents in Nigeria is becoming alarming and attracting national interest. A few days back, two Reverend sisters, a couple, and a driver all lost their lives in an accident while returning from Onitsha.
Now, another car accident has consumed even more lives in the country, and this time, it’s in Bauchi. Among the passengers of the car includes drivers, adults, and children. Some were seriously injured, and others burnt to death before help could come.
The cause of this tragic accident was a result of a public mini-bus and car collision along the highway in Bauchi, northern Nigeria.
According to the road safety commission, on Tuesday, 20th April, the accident resulted from a speed violation. In Nigeria, the speed limit on the highway is 100 km/hr. One of the drivers had been driving higher than the recommended speed limit.
In a statement, the Federal Road Safety Corps in Bauchi state says, “a speed violation caused the accident. A driver was injured, 20 were killed and burnt to ashes.”
Aside from the violation of the speed limit, another cause of increased car accidents on Nigerian roads is due to poor road maintenance, as many roads are ridden with potholes and are death traps for drivers.
As such, since there’s no lasting solution yet to be provided for the nature of these roads, drivers and road users should take precautions and avoid speed violations, whether on the highway or residential roads.
