The Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV is known for being great off-road and is a fancy status symbol for famous people. Now, since more cars are going electric, Mercedes has made an all-electric version called the G580 with EQ Technology. The G-class EV still looks like the old G-class but runs on electricity. It has four electric motors, one for each wheel, which can be controlled separately, making it great for tough terrain. These motors give it a total of 579 horsepower, which is as powerful as the gas-powered G63.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

The G580 with EQ Technology is different from its gas-powered versions mainly because it runs on electricity. It has four electric motors—one for each wheel—that together produce 579 horsepower and 859 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes has used this setup to give the electric G-class some good new off-road abilities. For example, it can do a 360-degree turn in its own space, called a tank turn, by making the right and left wheels move in opposite directions using something called a G-Turn. There’s also G-Steering, which helps with off-road driving by adjusting the power of each motor to make turning easier. Other features like virtual differential locks, torque vectoring, and an off-road crawl function are there to maintain its off-road abilities, like the gas-powered version. The G-class EV also has a ladder frame chassis like the gas version, with independent front suspension and a solid rear axle. Mercedes-Benz estimates that this electric G-wagon can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. This is likely true because the last AMG-tuned G63 model did it in 3.9 seconds.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The G-class EV has a big 116.0-kWh battery pack. Mercedes-Benz hasn’t said how far it can go on one charge yet, but it is estimated to be around 240 miles. This car is said to charge quickly with DC fast charging, up to 200 kW, taking about 32 minutes to go from 10 to 80 per cent. The electric G also has underbody protection plates to keep the battery safe on rough roads.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside the G580 EV, you’ll find a really fancy cabin with luxurious touches everywhere. It has standard Nappa leather seats and cool ambient lighting that you can customize. The dashboard is tall and upright, with little space between the base of the windshield and the steering wheel, giving the driver a great view of the road ahead. If you get the Active Multicontour Seat Plus package, you’ll even get massaging seats, and the side bolsters can adjust to keep you snug while off-roading. The back seat isn’t as roomy as the one in the larger Mercedes-Benz GLS class, but it’s similar to other fancy off-roaders like the Land Rover Defender. The cargo area is a bit smaller than the gas-powered model because of where they put the electric stuff, offering about 19.6 cubic feet of space compared to the gas model’s 38.7 cubic feet.

Information and connectivity

The G-class has two large 12.3-inch screens taking up most of the dashboard. One shows things like your speed and other information, while the other is for the infotainment system. It’s got Mercedes’s latest MBUX system, which has wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a voice assistant, and cool augmented-reality navigation. When you’re off-roading, you can switch to the Offroad Cockpit menu, which has stuff like a compass, altimeter, and tyre pressure monitor. You can also add two 11.6-inch screens for rear-seat entertainment. Plus, all G-classes come with a fancy Burmester stereo system with Dolby Atmos tech.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The G-class EV comes with a bunch of standard safety features. It has things like automated emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring, but it also has fancier stuff like lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control with lane centring, and even a self-parking feature. Plus, it can recognize traffic signs. Some other key safety features include automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control with lane centring.
