The criteria for getting suspended in some Nigerian polytechnics have extended to ownership and driving of cars into the school premises.  Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has issued warnings to all their students concerning the driving of cars into the school.

According to an internal memo signed by the institution’s Deputy Registrar, Students’ Affairs, Mrs. O.F. Ajayi, any student caught driving within the school will be suspended for one semester and the car will be seized.

The school has also gone ahead to state laws against students wearing dyed hair, ripped jeans, tattoos, nose, mouth, eye and extra earrings, intimate/open embrace, stylish haircuts, cowries wearing and other offences that attract one to two-semester suspension.

While these other laws exist, the one about the ban of students driving into school seems to appal many—students and others online.

Many find the ban to be completely outrageous and wonder how driving cars affects students’ academic participation.
