BMW 3 generations

The 3 series is currently in the 7th generation of production which started with the 2019 model.

The first generation of the BMW 3 Series

The maiden model of the 3 series was the E21 and it was manufactured from 1975-1983. This generation alone went through a number of progressions as it was only available in the coupe variant when it was first manufactured. The coupe had a carburetted 4-cylinder engine but fuel-injected 4-cylinder engines were later introduced later in the first year of manufacture. 1977 saw a new 6-cylinder engine introduced while a cabriolet body style was manufactured from 1978 to 1981.

Second Generation of the BMW 3 series

This was the E30 model and it was manufactured from 1982 to 19994. It was with this generation that the major changes started taking place. Although it started with a 2 door sedan style, four-door sedan, convertible, and estate models were later introduced along the line. Also, BMW debuted its diesel engine models for the 3 series with this 2nd generation.

The third generation of the BMW 3 Series

The E36 offered more options, including sedan coupe, wagon, convertible, and hatchback. This generation alone was endowed with three different types of engines: 6-speed manual transmission, 5-speed automatic transmission, and four-cylinder diesel engine. The suspension of this generation was significantly better than those on the previous generations, and this generation was recognized for its upgrade.

The fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series

The E46 was available in all the variants of the third generation but it had something better to offer: innovative technologies and electronic features, including electronic brake-force distribution, rain-sensing wipers, satellite navigation and LED taillights.

The fifth generation of the BMW 3 Series

Unlike the previous two generations, the fifth generation was only available in sedan, wagon, cabriolet, and coupe variants. The models in this generation include E90, E91, E92, and E93. This generation pioneered the introduction of a turbocharged petrol engine.

The sixth generation of the BMW 3 series

Although not very different from the fifth generation in looks, the sixth generation definitely had a lot of upgrades. BMW went back to producing all the variants of the 3rd and 4th generations. This generation featured the F30, F31 and F34 models which were all equipped with Turbocharged engines.

The seventh generation of the BMW 3 Series

The upgrade to the previous series is complete with a twin-turbo straight 6 engine.
