Goodluck Ebele Jonathan was born and had his early years in Bayelsa state. He is from the Ijaw minority ethnic group in Bayelsa state. After his primary education at both Saint Stephen Primary School, Otuoke (now State School, Otuoke) and Saint Michael Primary School, Oloibiri, Mr Jonathan proceeded to Mater Dei High School, Imiringi where he finished in 1975. Having completed his primary and secondary education, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan proceeded to have his bachelor’s degree in zoology, from which he graduated with second-class honours. Being a scholar, he didn’t rest on his oars, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan went further to clinch a masters degree and a doctorate in hydrobiology and fisheries biology, and zoology respectively from the prestigious University of Port Harcourt.

Pre-Presidency
Goodluck Ebele Jonathan didn’t begin his career as a politician. He was the Assistant Director at the now defunct Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development and Commission, OMPADEC. He also worked as an education inspector and a lecturer. By diligence and consistency, he rose to become the Head of the Environmental Protection Sub-Department of the Commission, before voluntarily resigning his appointment in 1998.
Political Career
His journey into Nigerian politics dates back to 1999. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is an active member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He served as Deputy Governor of Bayelsa state until December 2005, after being sworn in on 29th May 1999. On 9 December 2005, Jonathan, who was the deputy governor at the time, was sworn in as the governor of Bayelsa State upon the impeachment of the current Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha.
After his tenure as Governor, Goodluck Jonathan became the Vice President of Nigeria with Umarj Miss Yar’adua as the President. He became the Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on 9 February 2010, due to incessant medical treatment trips of the President. He was named the substantive President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on 6 May 2010, following the demise of President Yar’adua.
A year later, on 29 May 2011, he was sworn in as President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, becoming Nigeria’s 14th Head of State. He lost the presidency office to Muhammadu Buhari during the 2015 elections.
