Have you ever wondered why Minivans are no longer as popular as they used to be? Many people now prefer SUVs.

In fact, SUVs are taking over the car market. It had suddenly become the sole goal of many to own an SUV.

But there was a time when people wanted to own Minivans. Especially families. But today, SUVs have two-row and three-row seating arrangements that compete hard with Minivans. Many SUVs we are today are doing the same thing Minivans do and more.

So, let’s find out why Minivans phased off in the minds of many globally.

The Issue With Minivans & Why Nobody Wants Them

Experts refer to Minivans as vehicles hastily adapted with their crude & unrefined features compared to other vehicles.

In most early days, Minivans did not have crash safety, especially those that had their engines under the seats rather than in front of the cabin.

Some popular Minivans at then were the Bronco, Jeep Cherokee, and other similar models. Gradually, many started turning around to prefer compact sedans like the Camry that use the 4WD drive system. 4WD vehicles with additional seats quickly choose many instead of Minivans.

In the early 2000s, automakers realized that people loved cars like this and decided to make more but with higher seats. One of the first to be launched into the market was the Toyota Kluger, the Toyota Highlander in the USA.

The first iteration became the 2WD, replacing the Camry wagon. Slowly, it evolved into an all-wheel drive model.

Car markers started making ads that showed people dropping off the children for school, and going off-road with the same cars, gradually drawing the attention of many.

Why Many Choose SUVs Over Minivans?

The success of SUV cars over Minivan vehicles that used to be popular is due to many new features that the SUVs brought.

SUVs came with platform design features and components with regular sedans, making them far more acceptable and desirable to the public.

They added extra rows of seats, and the underpowered, poor handling of the Minivan was phased off.

SUVs today are more efficient both in performance and power. Even though we have Minivans like the Toyota Sienna and the Honda Odyssey, which have been remodified over time, they can never compete favourably with SUVs because SUVs have taken over from them the basic benefits they brought to car owners.

Are There Still Minivans In The Market To Date?

Yes. You’ll still find a handful of Minivans in the car market today. Below are some of them:

  • Toyota Sienna
  • Honda Odyssey
  • Kia Carnival
  • Chrysler Pacifica

Conclusion

There are still a few Minivans in the car market, but they are no longer as popular as they used to be in the 1990s and early 2000s. SUVs have taken over the market with their modern features and performance of the vehicles.
