The Toyota Highlander, also known as the Toyota Kluger is a mid-size crossover SUV produced by Toyota. It is built on the same platform as used on the Camry.

Announced in April 2000 at the New York International Auto Show and arriving in late 2000 in Japan and January 2001 in North America, the Highlander became one of the first car-based mid-size SUVs or mid-size crossovers. The Highlander is the crossover counterpart to the more rugged, truck-based mid-size 4Runner and became Toyota’s best-selling SUV before being surpassed by the smaller RAV4 in 2006. In Japan, the Kluger is exclusive to the dealership network called Toyota NETZ as a larger alternative to the RAV4.

Built on the same platform as used on the Toyota Camry, Toyota Highlander was welcomed with open arms in the Nigerian automobile market, proudly standing tall as one of the highest-selling SUVs of all time in Nigeria. Irrespective of the model, the Toyota Highlander remains evergreen and maintains its commanding presence in Nigeria.

Nigerian used cars are expected to be cheaper than foreign used cars. Understandably so, Nigerian used cars, no matter how neat, tend to have a depreciated overall rating when compared with foreign used cars. This is the same with most models of Nigerian-used Toyota Highlander.

Although prices of brand new Toyota Highlander are affected by fluctuating currency exchange rates, clearance, tariff, and customs fees, you can still get one between #20 million and #28 million, depending on the model and clearance charges. The latest 2019 model though costs between #35 million and #40 million naira, including customs charges and clearance settlements.

Foreign-used Toyota Highlander in Nigeria

With Nigeria being a well-known market for Tokunbo cars, Toyota Highlander foreign-used versions have boasted a far higher sale rate than the brand-new. This is largely due to their cheaper prices and ease of acquiring them. Another reason people have rather preferred the tokunbo version, especially the Toyota Highlander is that there is sparingly little difference between the brand new version, thanks to its versatility and easy maintenance.

Unlike other popular SUVs in its class, the space provided in the third row of the Toyota Highlander is not impressive. While the row comfortably fits children, adults will most likely feel confined on long trips.
