The Mercedes-Benz S500 and the Mercedes-Benz S580 are one and exact vehicles. However, where their difference lies in their age. The S500 is the older version of the S580. What both vehicles have between them are a solid 30 years.

1992 Mercedes Benz S500: What To Know

There was a time when this old Benz was a leading car in the Benz lineup. Despite being from 1992, the car was still popular and loved amongst many Nigerians even up to the early 2010s. In fact, it was a must-have vehicle in the garage of many wealthy Nigerians. 

The vehicle made its first-ever debut in 1991 as the new S-Class generation (W 140 series) at the Geneva Motor Show. The car’s body design incorporated the typical traditional Mercedes-Benz stylistic elements, fitting perfectly into the car model series.

The car was designed by designers Olivier Boulay and Bruno Sacco. The overall aim of this new S-Class generation was to achieve a high degree of aerodynamic quality while at the same time having useful everyday features.

The vehicle was a four-door sedan with several engine types depending on the trim level, all of which had a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual. Although a very old car, you’ll still find people who own and drive this car today in Nigeria.

2022 Mercedes Benz S580: What To Know

The 2022 Mercedes Benz S580 is one of the trim levels for the 2022 Mercedes Benz S-Class. The car is 30 years older than the 1992 version, which has significantly improved both the exterior and interior. 

Some of the major winning points of this car are that it earmarks the pinnacle of modern automotive luxury, a wealth of horsepower from both powertrains, and lavish mechanicals such as active air suspension and rear-wheel steering. 

The S580 has a smooth 496 horsepower twin-turbo V8. It is supplemented by a 48-volt hybrid system and paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive. The S580 prioritizes comfort and swankiness, which is evident from the leather thrones in the front and rear rows.

The sedan has an excellent 12.8-inch center OLED touchscreen and a 12.3-inch gauge cluster. An enhanced head-up display will also show navigation directions in augmented reality. The car’s build quality lives up to Mercedes’s upscale standards, and the sedan provides limousine-like accommodation for all passengers, especially the back riders. The vehicle offers good head and legroom and can also be equipped with power-adjustable reclining seats with massage functions and extensive heating elements. The vehicle also comes with connectivity and driver safety features.

Conclusion

While the 1992 S500 is still an okay car in 2022, it cannot compare with the S580 from 2022. The car has advanced over three decades from what it used to be. They might be brothers, but they’re certainly not mates.
