“I’m delighted to share that Tesla Canada is joining our already robust automotive and technology ecosystem by locating a manufacturing facility in the City of Markham. The facility will be the first branded Tesla Canada manufacturing facility in Canada and will produce state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment to be used at the Gigafactories located around the world in the production of batteries.”
He didn’t say much about the new facility, other than that it will make “manufacturing equipment” and that it will be used for the “production of batteries.”
Tesla purchased Hibar Systems, a manufacturing equipment company based in Ontario that develops machines used in the production of battery cells, in 2019. The company was based in Richmond Hill, Ontario, before Tesla took over, which is only a few minutes from Markham, where the new factory would be located.
Tesla appears to be moving its workforce to a larger site in the suburbs of Toronto, which is the next town over. The company’s requirement for battery manufacturing equipment is ramping up dramatically, as the company plans to install large-scale battery cell production at several distinct locations.
