The Toyota RAV4 was one of the earliest car-based crossover SUVs built by Toyota. It is one of the best-selling vehicles in Africa. The RAV4 has now joined the ranks of Toyota models to have achieved eight-figure sales. Cumulative figures for the top-selling SUV passed ten million at the end of February 2020,  spanning 26 years and five model generations since 1994. The current RAV4 has compact dimensions and seats up to five people.

It’s powered by a four-cylinder engine and offers a choice of front- or all-wheel drive; there’s also an available hybrid drivetrain. Maximum towing capacity is 3,500 pounds when properly equipped, further enhancing its versatility. A good fit for small families, the RAV4’s key competitors include the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, and Ford Escape.

1996 – 2000 Toyota Rav4 Reviews

Redesigned in 1996

The RAV4 (Recreational Activity Vehicle with 4WD) subcompact SUV debuted in two- and four-door versions with a choice of front-wheel drive or permanently engaged four-wheel drive. It was based on the platform used for the Celica sports coupe and had unibody construction, independent suspension and a four-cylinder engine. A two-door convertible version became available for the 1998 model year but was dropped in 2000. Starting in 1997, Toyota produced small numbers of RAV4 electric vehicles to meet California’s zero-emission-vehicle requirements. The EVs had a range of 88 to 95 miles; sales continued into 2003.

The second-generation RAV4 was slightly larger, roomier inside and featured more chiselled styling. It could seat up to five people, and it came only as a four-door SUV. The spare tire was mounted on the rear door, which swung open to the right — two carryover features from the first generation. A new four-cylinder engine made more power, and a larger, still more powerful four-cylinder with 161 hp arrived for the 2004 model year.

The RAV4 grew into compact dimensions with this redesign, adding 14 inches of overall length and more than 3 inches of width. It also gained an optional third row that increased seating capacity to seven (seating for five was still standard). In addition, a 269-hp V-6 engine became available as an upgrade to the standard four-cylinder engine. Optional on-demand all-wheel drive replaced a permanently engaged 4WD system, and a manual transmission was no longer offered. A larger, more powerful four-cylinder arrived in 2009, and in 2012 a battery-powered RAV4 EV (engineered by Tesla) with an EPA-estimated range of 103 miles went on sale in California. EV production continued into 2014 on this design.

Redesigned in 2013

In the fourth-generation RAV4, a liftgate replaced previous models’ side-opening rear door, and the spare tire moved under the cargo floor. The V-6 engine and third-row were dropped, leaving all gas-only models with a 176-horsepower four-cylinder engine and seating for five. Overall length shrunk by an inch, and the RAV4’s styling took on a meaner, more aggressive look. Inside, the rear seat lost its fore-aft sliding feature, and the relocated spare tyre took up some underfloor storage space. An RAV4 Hybrid with standard all-wheel-drive was added for the 2016 model year, and for 2017 Toyota’s Safety Sense P, an active safety suite became standard. An efficiency-minded, performance-ready crossover is the world we want to live in, but the one we do live in still buys the regular RAV4 at an alarming rate. We give the 2021 RAV4 a 5 for performance based on the regular powertrain. The all-wheel-drive systems offered on the RAV4 aren’t all the same: LE and XLE versions get a base system that shuttles power backwards for low grip.

Prices of Foreign Used Toyota RAV4 In Nigeria

Most Africans especially Nigerians have chosen to own the used model of the Toyota RAV4 for the same purpose and almost the same quality as the brand-new models simply because of its robustness, efficiency, and durability. A foreign-used Toyota RAV4 is still as good as a completely new model, as long as the engine and other vital parts of the SUV are still in perfect shape.

Nigerian used Toyota RAV4 prices 2020

Locally used cars are popular because they are cheaper than foreign used models. Although, there is a loss of freshness, quality and sometimes, general efficiency not in all cases of buying. Like some of Toyota’s jeeps or crossovers, the RAV4 boasts excellent durability and superb performance over a long period thanks to its dynamic and well-engineered engines. Purchasing a used Toyota RAV4 could be a wise choice for many.

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 is not exactly the most entertaining compact SUV from a driver’s standpoint but its practicality and efficiency make it of good value. The entry-level model is affordable but very basic, but mid-range trims offer plenty of features that buyers in this segment will appreciate.

A 2.5-litre four-cylinder is standard as is an eight-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available, but you would not see even the most rugged model in the RAV4 line-up sidling up to a 4Runner or a Tacoma at the trailhead.
