He left Nigeria at the age of 16 and went on to play in Italy, and has since then played for numerous clubs all around Europe.  He began his senior career as a footballer playing for Inter Milan, before going on to join Newcastle United in 2006, then onto Bundesliga club VFL Wolfsburg in 2009, before joining Birmingham City in January 2011.

At the beginning of his football career he was scouted by Churchill Oliseh, and from there joined a local football club called F.C. Ebedei. And from there on, some clubs were interested in him and he later joined the club in 2000. He transferred to Inter Milan in 2001 for a fee of 750,000 Euros. He continued to play at Inter Milan, helping the club to win several tournaments and in 2005 he signed a long-term contract, where he was paid 2.5 million Euros yearly up until 2010. While playing at Inter Milan, he became the first teenager to score in three consecutive Champions League Seasons, and he continued playing with speed and tenacity which earned him a playing spot in Nigeria’s 2006 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) team.

In August 2006, his transfer request was accepted by Newcastle United for a fee of 15 million Euros, on a five years deal. At Newcastle, he was given the number 9 shirt, but on the 27^th of August 2006 when his team played against Aston Villa he suffered a severe knee injury, but this did not deter him career-wise. On the 17^th of September 2006, he scored his very first goal for Newcastle.

Goal.com reports that Obafemi Martins has joined the Chinese Super League side Wuhan Zall as a free agent after his departure from rivals Shanghai Shenhua. The striker returned to football in July, rejoining the Flower of Shanghai, having been without a club since 2018 due to a hamstring injury.
