The Nigerian Senate has finally addressed the public outcry that followed after it was announced that President Bola Tinubu has decided to purchase Toyota Land Cruisers for all 469 Nigerian lawmakers across the country.

Speaking on Tuesday, October 24th to a journalist in Abuja, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Senate Services, Sunday Karimi noted that he was disappointed about the media frenzy that met the revelation that 469 lawmakers in Nigeria will be receiving brand new SUVs from the president. He noted that Nigerian lawmakers took into cognizance some factors before reaching the conclusion.

According to the Senator, some of these considerations include bad roads in Nigeria and the durability of these SUVs. He stated that the public outcry was unfair, and added that the Executive arm of government is worse in this kind of situation.

Adding to the Senate response on the SUV purchase, Akin Rotimi, the chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs noted that the operational vehicles would remain the property of the National Assembly until the lawmaker’s tenure elapses.

This decision to purchase 469 brand new SUVs worth billions of Naira for Nigerian lawmakers is coming at a time when millions of Nigerians are experiencing hardships caused largely by the fuel subsidy removal and the devaluation of the Naira.
