The brake light is an important part of every car. Every car needs a brake light, and a car without a brake light could become a challenge to other vehicles on the road. Driving a car without a functional brake light is equally an offence that could lead to a fine in Nigeria.

However, our car brakes often start developing issues, and we have no idea until they’ve completely spoilt. If you can’t afford to go to the mechanic to figure out the condition of your car’s brake light, here are some essential ways to find brake light problems.

  1. Brake Light With A Burnt-Out Bulb

Once the bulb in your vehicle’s brake light is burnt, it’s definitely time to check your car’s brake light. Most modern vehicles use LED lights, which last longer. However, older model cars still make use of old-style bulbs, which means they get burnt easily.

This is because car owners use their car’s brakes often throughout the day, and the bulb is always coming on each time you press your car’s brake pedal.

You fix this problem by simply changing the bulb. Changing the brake light bulb is usually easy, but if you can’t, it’s best to drive it to a mechanic to change the bulb.

  1. Blown Fuse

Oftentimes, when the brake lights in your car aren’t functional, it could be that a fuse has blown. Fixing a blown fuse can be a challenge when you don’t know the fuse control that went bad. In that case, drive the car to a mechanic who’ll be able to locate the blown fuse that controls the brake light.

  1. Faulty Brake Light Switch

If the bulb and fuse of your brake light are good, then the cause of your brake light problem could be a faulty brake light switch. This is because if the switch does not make contact to signal the brake lights, they won’t light properly. So, you’ll need to change the switch.

The brake light switch is usually located under the driver’s dash behind the insulation. Once it’s been fixed, the brake light will start functioning properly again.

  1. Malfunctioning Bulb Socket

Another reason why your car’s brake light could be malfunctioning could be due to a malfunctioning bulb socket. It could be that the wiring in the bulb socket is now worn out. In that case, you’ll need to change the socket.

Changing a bulb socket can be a bit technical when you’re unfamiliar with the process. Instead of ruining something else during the process, it’s best if you send the car to the mechanic to fix it.

Conclusion

Car brake lights are essential and should always stay active in every car. So, once you’ve noticed it’s not functional, it could be any one of these issues, and they are easily fixable.
