When the CX-60 launched, it debuted a new inline-4 PHEV powertrain, but where is the straight 6?? Mazda is launching a “multi- energy” approach by offering Diesel, Gas, PHEV, mild hybrid and full EV offerings and their new diesels are high tech, achieving an incredible 40% thermal efficiency. Here we have the first gas, naturally aspirated Inline-6 and it feels like we are reincarnating BMW from 20 years ago.

The new mild hybrid gas 3.3L Inline-6 makes 280HP and 331 lb-ft of torque in Australia but won’t be available in north america. (we will get a more powerful PHEV) This engine is paired to an 8 speed DCT gearbox and sends power to all four wheels with a RWD bias. This engine will arrive in the US in the CX-70 and 90 with more power, a PHEV system and possibly rumored turbos in the future.

There also is the e-Skyactiv PHEV which combined a 2.5L. 4 cylinder and electric motor to make 323HP and 369 lb-ft of torque with 0-60 in 5.8sec, 39miles of EV range and a dual clutch gearbox.

Also remember the US market will not get the CX-60 but instead the yet to be seen CX-70 which is a widebody more US focused version of the 60. The CX-90 will arrive first with 3-rows of seating on the same platform. Why an in-line 6? Well Mazda wanted the smoothness of the in-line layout as well as the reliability of an under stressed engine.
