Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton was born into a biracial family on the 7th of January 1985, in Stevenage, an English town north of London. His father’s name is Anthony Hamilton, whose parents were immigrants from Grenada in the West Indies in the 1950s. His mother, Carmen Larbalestier divorced his father when Lewis was 2 years old still, he lived with her until he was 10 then moved in with his father and stepmother, Linda, with their three-year-old son, Nicolas who suffers from cerebral palsy. To Lewis, his brother, Nicolas became an inspiration. He once said, “I only have to think of Nic to feel motivated and put a smile on my face.”

While his motivation comes from his brother, his steely ambition and resilience to achieve success come from his father. He said this about him when he said, “even though he always told me to be courteous and polite, my focus and determination comes from, and has always been driven by, my dad.”

Soon, his father became his mentor and manager, who worked day and night for years to further Lewis’ racing career despite the family’s financial struggles.

At 15, Lewis broke the record of being the best kart driver globally, this has also become a title he has retained till today.

At 37, Lewis appears unmarried and seemingly uninterested in going into relationships. As such, he has been single for a long time. One time, it was rumoured he and his physiotherapist, Angela Cullen were dating in early 2021.

R.C cars were his first attempt until the motorsports world. His first R.C car was given to him by his father at six years old in 1991. He has been racing remote-controlled cars and has finished second in a national competition.

As he once said, “I was racing these remote-controlled cars and won club championships against grownups.” After that, Anthony wondered if his abilities would translate to a large-scale Motorsport setting.

In 1995, Lewis, a 10-year old,  picked up two trophies as a kart champion at a Motorsport awards ceremony in London. He met McLaren team manager Ron Dennis during the award event and said to him, “Hello Mr Dennis, I’m Lewis Hamilton and one day I’d like to race for your team.” He asked for his autographs and phone number. Ron Dennis wrote them into an autograph book Lewis had said, “call me in nine years.”

Three years later, the call came in. It was rather the Hamiltons that were telephoned by Ron Dennis, who presented Anthony with an offer to financially support his son’s career for the foreseeable future.
