Mercedes-Benz is trying to find new ways to make money, just like BMW. This is because the time of all-electric cars is coming closer and closer. Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) can need little to no maintenance if the energy storage unit and the motor(s) work well. This is because BEVs have a simpler design and fewer moving parts. So, it will get harder to sell brand-name parts as more and more people switch to BEVs.

It’s true that service centres at dealerships are where most of the maintenance money comes from. But EV buyers are becoming more interested in the direct-to-customer sales model, which could mean that dealerships won’t have to act as middlemen in the future. Brands like Mercedes-Benz might only need a simple showroom and a few EV technicians who can also drive and fix customer cars remotely. And just like that, dealers are no longer needed at all. Or, some will live because they can adjust to the new world.

At the same time, we got fully electric cars at a time when technology was changing quickly. In the world of cars, many of the newest hardware, software, and entertainment features are just coming out or are being added. It was shown at CES 2023.
Also, if we think about how EVs can’t make us feel as much as a V8-powered car can, it’s easier to see why cars with no tailpipe emissions need the best technology there is. They have to give you something else to make up for that. Things like the Model S’s Full Self-Driving Beta or the BMW i7’s wide 8K screen for passengers in the back are not just for show. They take the place of “La Meccanica Delle Emozioni,” as Alfa Romeo put it so beautifully.
Switching to a new car market with only EVs gives manufacturers the chance to streamline the production process in ways that had never been thought of before. Take BMW and how you can sign up to have heated seats. The cars will have the right wiring, but you won’t be able to use this feature unless you subscribe or buy it as part of a package that gives you the permanent access. A better example is Tesla, which charges extra for things like faster acceleration and more advanced driver-assistance systems.
But there’s more. By making cars more connected, automakers will be able to learn more about how their customers drive. Again, Tesla is a good example because it uses telemetry to figure out which of its customers can join the FSD Beta program or whose rates are lower. Things change very quickly.
You have to be ready for it
All this tells us that carmakers need new sources of revenue. And if it worked with Tesla, why wouldn’t it fit legacy automakers’ needs? If people pay $15,000 for the promise of having a self-driving car one day, won’t they spend money on more sensible features that are a lot cheaper?
That may be why Mercedes-Benz has an online shop for its EV customers. There you’ll find the much-debated improved acceleration feature that unlocks your electric car’s full potential through a, you guessed it, yearly subscription. We broke the news about it back in December before anyone else.
But the German marque also thought about using technology to better protect their customers’ cars.
So, for only $25 (excluding tax) per year, a Mercedes-Benz owner can have more control over their vehicle and more peace of mind. Since thefts are a problem that expensive car buyers must consider, an option like “Stolen Vehicle Assistance” might come in handy at some point. Plus, it might also help with lowering insurance premiums.
