We hear about smart keys and keyless cars a lot. But are they the same? If a car is keyless, does it mean it uses a smart key?

Another name for a keyless entry is passive key. The name passive is because, with a keyless entry, you can open and lock your car without using a regular car key. You don’t need to use a car remotely. In most keyless entry cars, the lock system is installed near the driver’s door. 

Mainly, keyless entry systems are used only for locking and unlocking a car. The majority of new models cars with keyless entry systems come with a subordinate remote key system. 

What Is A Smart Key?

Smart keys are still keyless entry systems, but there’s still a difference between them. Smart keys come with specially installed chips and sensors. They are used to lock, unlock car doors and start a vehicle. 

Once the smart key is pressed, the car recognizes it through a radio pulse generator. Each car comes with a smart key tailored to it. Every smart key has its security code used when you want to reprogram the key fob. 

With advanced model car keys, you can adjust car settings to customize car speed limits and set wheel positioning and cabin temperature. When you lose your smart key, you can reorder another one specific to your can. But, it’s not as easy as getting a regular car key from a locksmith. 

Differences Between Smart Keys & Keyless Entry 

Now that we know what Keyless entry systems and smart keys are, the differences come. Most people think they are the same. But, there are differences between the both of them. 

  • Versatility 

Smart keys are more versatile than keyless entry systems. With a smart key, you can lock, unlock, set, reset and drive your car.

While keyless entry systems are used only for locking, unlocking, and starting cars. They don’t perform the same level of function as smart keys. All smart keys are keyless entry systems but not all keyless entry fobs are smart keys.

  • Remote Action

A smart key performs more remote action than a regular keyless entry fob. Due to the sensor and chip installed in a smart key, you can lock and unlock your car depending on the proximity to your car. 

But, a keyless fob only requires you to be close to the car to lock, unlock or perform any action. 

  • Performance Level

Smart keys can perform various functions in a car. But, for a keyless entry fob, the level of its performance is limited. 

Conclusion

We can call every smart key a keyless entry system but not every keyless entry fob can function as a smart key. Some of the keyless entry systems we have only differed from regular keys because it uses technological devices for locking and unlocking cars. But, it does not mean they’re all smart keys.
