All government officials across European countries are bracing themselves for the energy crisis that will hit the continent in the coming months.
Nearly all European countries, both in and outside the European Union, have levied sanctions against Russia in the aftermath of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
As a consequence of this, energy prices continue to rise, and supply will also likely shrink.
It’s due to this reason that Swiss government officials have been drafting emergency proposals to restrict power usage in certain cases.
Having said that, Switzerland is not going for a complete EV ban. Rather, electric car owners could use their cars for “essential” trips under the new bill.
Switzerland is one country that has been at the forefront of the adoption of EVs for quite some time now. Electric cars made up nearly 22% of new vehicles registered in the country last year.
This means that Swiss car owners buy more EVs than their American, British, and even Canadian counterparts.
The percentage of EV car owners in Switzerland goes up further if we include plug-in hybrid vehicles, which, like EVs, can be charged using domestic plug sockets.
Regarding cars, sanctions always bring a snowball effect on the market. Like many other European countries, Switzerland heavily relies on imported energy, especially during winter.
The country is trying to diversify its supply routes, but this will inevitably take some time.
Following Switzerland’s leads, other European countries could also go for a temporary EV ban.
