When buying a car, it is important to check how reliable the car is. No one wants a car that gets bad after a short period of time or that requires regular repairs. The perfect, reliable car doesn’t cost much to upkeep and gets excellent miles per gallon, so they don’t have to stop for fuel a lot. This is what your hybrid car offers. On the other hand, they are fuel-efficient gasoline cars that bring the same to the table. So, hybrid cars and fuel-efficient gasoline cars are more reliable. This article aims to explore that.

What are hybrid cars?

What To Do When Your Hybrid Car’s Battery Dies

A hybrid car is a car that uses both an electric motor and a gasoline engine. Unlike electric cars, hybrids don’t need to be plugged in to charge. Instead, the battery gets charged while driving, especially during braking, and by the regular gasoline engine. The electric power comes from a high-voltage battery that gets recharged by braking and the gas engine. It gets its energy through regenerative braking, which converts energy lost during braking into power.

The car can be powered by the electric motor alone, the gas engine alone, or both together, which leads to less gasoline use and better fuel economy. Hybrid cars don’t need to be plugged in to charge; the battery charges while driving. The electric motor supports the engine, improving efficiency, and can also power other car parts, reducing engine idling.

Fuel efficiency measures how well a car converts fuel into kinetic energy for travel. It shows how far a car can go on a certain amount of fuel, often described as “miles per gallon” (mpg). A fuel-efficient car uses less fuel. It is a car that will travel the same distance as another car but will get there using less fuel than other cars, reducing wasted fuel. Usually, a good fuel consumption figure for a car should be around 40 mpg to 60 mpg. Cars achieving 40 mpg can help keep fuel costs low; anything above 40 mpg is even more impressive. Choosing a fuel-efficient vehicle has many benefits, including saving on fuel costs, lowering carbon emissions, and reducing reliance on oil.

Understanding a reliable car

A reliable car is one that consistently works well with minimal problems and doesn’t need frequent repairs. It performs dependably over time, especially with regular maintenance. A reliable car will provide a stress-free ownership experience and should help you to keep hold of the car for many years.

Hybrid and fuel-efficient gasoline cars: which is more reliable?

When comparing how reliable these cars are, let’s consider a few things: maintenance and the cost of repairs.

  • Maintenance

A hybrid car still has a gasoline engine and drivetrain that need regular maintenance, like oil changes and replacing hoses, brakes, and tyres, just like a gas-only vehicle. However, the hybrid’s electric system doesn’t add much to regular maintenance and might even reduce it. The electric system reduces the load on the gasoline engine, especially in traffic and at low speeds, potentially lowering wear and the frequency of oil changes. Additionally, the electric motor’s regenerative braking system, which recharges the battery, handles much of the braking, significantly reducing the need for maintenance and replacement of conventional friction brakes.

  • Cost of repairs

You generally face the same repair risks and costs as with fuel-efficient gasoline vehicles, but hybrids have components that can be costly to repair. These specialized parts may require skilled technicians and more time to fix, including the continuously variable automatic transmissions (CVTs) used in many hybrids. On the plus side, some CVTs, like those in many Toyotas, eliminate the need for an alternator, starter, and belts. A major concern for many is the high-voltage battery pack. Although battery replacement costs have decreased, they might still exceed the vehicle’s value. While the failure risk is low, a hybrid vehicle won’t run without a functioning battery.

  • Reliability

While repair costs are important when choosing a vehicle, avoiding repairs is even better, and hybrids excel here. You can go years with a hybrid car without needing to maintain it. According to Consumer Reports’ latest Annual Auto Reliability Survey, hybrids are significantly more reliable than other types of vehicles, including gasoline-only, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and full electrics. Hybrids had 26% fewer problems on average than gas-only vehicles, whereas EVs had 79% more problems, and PHEVs had 146% more problems. This reliability is due to automakers’ extensive experience with hybrids. Companies like Toyota, Hyundai, and Kia, known for reliable vehicles, have refined their hybrid technology over time.
