The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged Nigerian drivers to replace their faded number plates with new and clear enough-to-read ones. The FRSC emphasises the importance of having clear and readable number plates, as they help the authorities to identify vehicles involved in accidents, stolen or used for illicit activities. The FRSC also recommended that motorists should visit any State Licencing Office to apply for the replacement of their faded number plates.

The Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Lagos, Mr Babatunde Farinloye, recently advised motorists to avoid driving with faded number plates to avoid facing prosecution. In an interview with Newsmen in Lagos on Friday, Farinloye recommended that motorists should regularly wash their vehicle’s number plate with soap and water to prevent it from fading.

He added that although it takes six years for the number plate to expire, it can still develop issues such as fading and damage before the expiry date.
The FRSC added that :
“Make the security of vehicle a priority, replace faded Number Plates with new ones today. When your Number Plate fades, contact relevant State Licencing Offices for a replacement. Faded Number Plate is a risk to the vehicle and the owner.”
The Agency noted that the use of harsh materials such chemicals and detergents as well as other harsh objects to wash them are some of the reasons why license plate, also known as vehicle registration plate, fades easily.
“Vehicle Number Plates are not designed to last forever. Weather conditions, constant use of chemicals and detergents as well as other harsh objects can easily clean out the coloring on the plate.”
