There was once a time that the idea of a luxury SUV meant a Range Rover, and even that was pretty agricultural by modern standards. Then Jeep Grand Cherokees and Ford Explorers started offering fancy, range-topping versions followed soon by Lexus and Mercedes coming in with hot vehicles. 

Today, there is a staggering number of luxury SUVs available in every shape, size and price point. There are even electric luxury SUVs like the Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace, as well as gas-swilling, high-performance SUVs like the BMW X5 M and Mercedes-AMG G 63. Sports car makers Porsche, Aston Martin and Lamborghini have even dived in. 

But of these great many, which are the cheapest luxury SUVs? They are listed below;

2022 BMW X1

The BMW X1 is currently one of the oldest models still in production in the line-up of the Bavarian carmaker. It was originally unveiled back in 2015 and, alongside cars like the MINI Countryman, it is still in production today, heading towards the end of the line. The replacement BMW has in store will be a much more complicated machine but also meant to be a drastic upgrade compared to the outgoing model. According to sources, the X1 will get an all-electric model and it is very likely that it will wear the iX1 badge on the tailgate. The upcoming BMW X1 is slated to go into production in July, next year. It will use the same engines like the ones already available on the new 2 Series Active Tourer and add electric ones to the list on the iX1 versions. At first, according to our sources, the iX1 will be available in two guises: eDrive20 (FWD) and xDrive30 (AWD). The specs and battery sizes will be unveiled at a later date. The expected starting price of this vehicle is N13.9 million.

2022 BMW 2 SERIES

The 2022 BMW 2 Series continues the legacy started by the 1 Series Coupe back in 2008. Though it is among the most affordable and humble BMW models in the range, it best captures the spirit of the E46 M3 era that many enthusiasts say has fallen by the wayside in recent years. The second-generation 2 Series arrives as a coupe-only model with two engine options, although a convertible will arrive at a later date. A base 230i model offers a 255-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder sending power to the rear wheels, while the M240i steps it up with a turbocharged inline-six delivering 382 horsepower to all corners. There is no manual transmission offered, only an eight-speed automatic, while rivals like the Ford Mustang give you both. The estimated price is N14.9 million.

2022 AUDI A3

The well-respected last generation A3 sedan has been replaced by an all-new 2022 model which has been modernised in every fashion but retains the fun-to-drive nature that endeared us to the previous model. German rivals such as the BMW 21series Gran Coupe and the Mercedes-Benz A-class are fuelling consumers’ appetites for small, premium sedans so it is no wonder Audi is doubling down on its compact car and giving it a richer interior, advanced technology, and razor-sharp looks. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard, all-wheel drive is optional, and a host of driver-assistance features are on hand, which are to make the A3 a desirable choice. The expected price is N13.9 million.

2022 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPORT

Few rivals offer the kind of go-anywhere abilities as the 2022 Discovery Sport, which lives up to the Land Rover name with standard all-wheel drive, water-fording capability, and plentiful off-road tech features. Those types of things are not offered on other compact luxury SUVs such as the BMW X3. The Porsche Macan or the Mercedes-Benz GLC-class. Those road-oriented crossovers deliver more engaging handling than the Discovery Sport, though, and their cabins are more premium. 2022 PORSCHE 718 CAYMAN

Few cars, including other types of sports cars, offer the same purity of mission as the 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman. Its mid-engine arrangement and expertly tuned suspension give it a joyful driving demeanour that is truly addictive. Buyers can choose from a horizontally opposed four- or six-cylinder engine. Fans of open-air driving will find the 718 Boxster a similar experience. The estimated price of this model is N24.8 million.

2022 LEXUS UX

The 2022 Lexus UX is perfect for drivers who want a small hatchback marketed as a crossover with premium features at a premium price. While the UX is more affordable than most luxury alternatives, it is less practical and a lot less powerful. 

The hybrid UX250h at least brings all-wheel-drive and better fuel economy, but the front-drive-only UX200 actually proves thriftier at highway speeds. 2022 VOLVO XC40

Among the already fashionable lineup of Volvo SUBs, this is even the more chic, hip and youthful one. The entry-level model is powered by a 184-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder that wears the T4 badge, but the spunkiest version is the T5, which offers 248 horsepower and standard all-wheel drive. 

The XC40 brings with it plenty of techs, too, including available driver assists that are borrowed from higher-end Volvo models, including the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving mode. Still, the XC40 isn’t all-flash. Its cabin is thoughtfully designed with clever storage opportunities, and its cargo area is generously sized. Plus, when compared to other rivals such as BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-class, Volvo’s higher seating position will appeal to SUV enthusiasts. The estimated price of this model is N22 million.

2022 LEXUS IS

With its chiselled features and premium interior, the 2022 Lexus IS looks the part of a compact sports sedan. Three engines are available which are a turbo four-cylinder, a V-6, or a V-8, with the latter two delivering aggressive F Sport styling and chassis enhancements. Despite its appearance, the IS delivers a refined ride, but those seeking sharp handling may find that it’s too soft. 

Rivals such as the Audi A4, the BMW 3-Series and the Genesis G70 offer more driving engagement and livelier powertrains. Still, the IS offers a well-rounded entry-luxury package with handsome styling and desirable features that should win its favour with buyers seeking curb appeal. The estimated price of this model is N35 million.

2022 JAGUAR E-PACE

The 2022 Jaguar E-Pace is the British brand’s attempt to seduce younger buyers seeking a small crossover with a luxury pedigree. While Jaguar’s reputation was born from sedans that shuttle society’s richest members, it now butters its bread with profits from SUVs such as the mid-size F-Pace. The tinier E-Pace exists below the F and competes with subcompact rivals such as the BMW X2 and Volvo XC40. The turbo-four powered, all-wheel-drive Jaguar is not as quick, fuel-efficient, or practical as those two. The 2022 E-Pace is pricier than most of its classmates and not as classy, but its exclusiveness and stylishness might offset some of those compromises. 2022 INFINITI QX50

The 2022 Infiniti QX50 blends beautiful bodywork with an innovative interior in a compact luxury crossover package but, Infiniti’s variable-compression turbocharged four-cylinder (VC-Turbo for short) does not live up to its promise of better fuel economy and notable performance. Rivals such as the Audi Q5 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC300 are quicker and similarly thrifty at the pump. At least the QX50 succeeds as one of the more stylish entries in its segment, with an interior that’s as spacious as it is luxurious. The estimated price of this model is N17 million.

2022 MERCEDES-BENZ GLA 250 SUV

With a higher style quotient than the boxy GLB-class, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA-class SUV gives up some practicality in favour of a better roofline and add curb appeal. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers perky performance, and handling is agile enough to deliver some thrills on a curvy road. Inside, you will find all of the infotainment, luxury, and convenience features that Mercedes-Benz offers on its larger SUVs. The estimated price of this model is N15.7 million.

2022 MERCEDES-BENZ A 220 SEDAN

The A220 Sedan is a capable little car that drives as well as it looks. It might not be a performance champion, and in fact, many of its rivals are faster, but Mercedes-Benz still offers this subcompact luxury sedan with an all-wheel-drive system. This does not necessarily make it better to drive but adds a sense of security and sure-footedness to the driving experience. 

Other than the AWD system in the A220 4Matic, every other feature is shared with the FWD A220.
