Following the death of Oba Okunade Sijuwade, who died on July 28, 2015, in a London hospital, Adeyeye Ogunwusi was selected as the king-elect out of 21 contenders to the Ooni stool. He was crowned as the 51st Ooni of Ife on Monday, December 7th, 2015 at Enuwa Square, Ile-Ife. The Coronation was graced with the presence of several dignitaries from all walks of life, including the Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
On the day of his coronation, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi promised to cause peace and prosperity to abound during his reign. On January 17th, 2016, the Ooni broke a 79-year-old antagonism between the thrones of Ife and Oyo by visiting the Alaafin, the first of such visits in eight decades by an Ife monarch. Various notable and outstanding progress has been recorded in Ife since he began to reign. He established a large Coco farm with the intent of feeding thousands of widows in the state.
