His father, Mr Joshua Bassey was a Pastor of the Apostolic Church, Bashua Assembly. Nathaniel Bassey was exposed to music at a young age by attending church. He began attending shows and parties to demonstrate his Jazz skills. Seeking a Jazz group, Nathaniel Bassey joined a top jazz quartet in Lagos, Spectrum 4, where he played alongside his childhood friends. He soon got a big breakthrough in his Jazz music career quest when he was invited by Elder Steve Rhodes to lead, arguably, the first Jazz Orchestra in the country – THE STEVE RHODES ORCHESTRA. Nathaniel Bassey served as band leader and lead trumpeter for a period of two years before continuing with his music career.

This began a new level of born again experience for Nathaniel Bassey; and with the mentorship and guidance of Late Pastor Eskor Mfon, the former Pastor of The Redeemed Christian Church Of God, City Of David Parish, Nathaniel Bassey made a transition and a gospel music ministry was born. Though he was ridiculed by friends and some family for his change of music career path, Nathaniel Bassey decided to follow the call within him.

Nathaniel Bassey took formal training to hone his musical talent. He has attended music courses in and out of the country including the Middlesex University Summer School UK, where he studied popular music and music business.

In June 2017, Nathaniel Bassey started the Hallelujah Challenge which is an online 30-day midnight prayer and praise session. The live Gospel concert was streamed on Facebook and Instagram; thousands of people both from Nigeria and beyond followed the praise concert with various testimonials of miracles and healings. As of Friday 16th June, CNN reported that about 68,000 people joined the Instagram live stream, while over 50,000 joined the Facebook live stream.

Statistics from Evolve Press revealed 10,000 posts with the hashtag ‘#HallelujahChallenge’ and over 18,000 with the hashtag ‘#Olowogbogboro’ making it the number one trend in Nigeria.
