Nigeria’s popular pickup, the Toyota Hilux, is set to receive a new generation, with a launch planned for early 2026. According to Carexpert, Toyota is preparing to unveil the ninth and completely redesigned version of the Hilux. The development is currently taking place in Brazil, which will serve various markets across Latin America. Details about this project have begun to emerge from suppliers in Brazil, as Toyota has submitted plans for the production of components for the new pickup. This initiative is internally referred to by the code name 640X.
The name of the project, 640X, will be officially announced and will coincide with launches in Thailand and South Africa, given Toyota Brazil’s role in producing the new generation of the Hilux. Starting in 2026, Toyota Thailand will manage the production of the Hilux for the Middle East market, followed by a PPV-certified SUV called the SW4, which is the second name for the Fortuner in Latin America.
Autoesporte reports indicate that the chassis platform will be based on the current IMV platform but will include key updates to the frame and chassis. It will not utilize the TNGA-F platform, which is found in modern Toyota and Lexus body-on-frame models. The new Hilux will feature a 2.8-liter diesel engine, offering 204 horsepower, paired with a 16-horsepower integrated electric motor. This engine will replace the existing electrical system with a lithium-ion battery boasting a capacity of 0.2 kW.
