According to Toyota, in the future, diesel, gasoline electric, and even hybrid vehicles will be forgotten due to this one powertrain the brand is building. Apart from the environmental benefits of this new engine, the power behind it is also set to be revolutionary.
Toyota says the engine that can do this is none other than the hydrogen engine. The company produced the prototype through a leading mobility technology company, AVL Racetech in collaboration with Hungarian HUMDA Lab.
The engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that boasts 405 horsepower and 500 NM of torque. While hydrogen combustion engines have long been known for low performance, the car company notes that all of that preconception is about to change.

With this new engine, it can reach competitive highs of 205 horsepower per liter, more than the Bugatti Chiron which produces 185 horsepower per liter.
This engine differs from hydrogen combustion in a fuel-cell vehicle, which works like a traditional engine using hydrogen instead of petrol.
This next-generation engine converts hydrogen into electrical energy to power an electric motor. Toyota is set to revolutionize the vehicle world with this new engine.
Benefits of the Toyota Hydrogen-Powered Engines
The Toyota hydrogen-powered engine has been around for a while. However, the car manufacturer is set to launch an even more fierce version of the engine that comes with a handful of benefits that will attract more car buyers.
From the look of things, the hydrogen-powered engine seems a huge competitor for both fuel and lithium battery-powered cars in the future with its benefits that include:
- The Hydrogen-Powered Engines are Easy to Refuel
Filling up a hydrogen-powered car is easy and does not take as much time as filling a fuel-powered engine. Toyota already has this engine in its Toyota Yaris GRH2 and it only takes a minute and a half to fill the vehicle’s engine, which is faster than it would take to fill the tank on a Toyota Camry.
- The Toyota Hydrogen-Powered Engines are Environmentally Friendly
Fuel can withstand temperatures of up to -100 degrees Fahrenheit while lithium batteries can withstand up to -140 degrees Fahrenheit before they start to freeze up. Hydrogen engine on the other hand can withstand -435 degrees Fahrenheit. Hydrogen has a much broader climate adaptability than the other two.
- The Materials Used for Making Hydrogen Engines are not Scarce Unlike EVs
Lithium batteries are made out of materials that require a lot of hard work to produce. The CEO of Toyota sees a shortage of lithium and battery grade in the future, which means that there will be a lack of materials needed to produce the lithium batteries used in EVs. That could create a major setback in the move towards electric vehicles, which could be avoided by using hydrogen-powered engines if they are engineered to maximize their full potential.
- Hydrogen Engine Vehicles Won’t Explode or Catch Fire
One of the safety concerns with hydrogen energy being used in cars is the risk of explosion. Some experts claim a hydrogen explosion resembles more of a bomb than a typical spark and fire, which has caused many to avoid hydrogen-powered cars. However, compared to lithium-ion overheating or reacting poorly to environmental conditions, hydrogen (when handled properly) can be safer, and less reactive compared to EVs lithium batteries.
