The rise of automatic transmissions and the growth of electric cars has meant a decline in manual transmission vehicles. Many Toyota vehicles fall within the automatic transmission category, as Toyota car owners can’t manually switch and shift their own car gears.

While manually shifted gears could still be the remains of older car technology. It gives most car owners the feeling that comes from actively engaging with their cars. Toyota understands this, and the car brand is bringing manual transmission back.

Interestingly, the automaker has filed patents for mechanisms allowing them to fit electric vehicles with manual transmission. How cool would that be?
Will Toyota Hybrid Cars Get Manual Transmission?
Toyota has filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, allowing them to offer manual transmission to electric cars. According to MotorBiscuits, “The system will enable electric vehicles to switch between standard driving and a simulated H-pattern manual control mode.”
The new system will use a “pseudo-clutch” and a “pseudo-shifter” input to adjust the electric motor’s torque.
This aims to provide Toyota hybrid car owners with a driving experience like manual cars, without any challenges. This device will allow electric vehicles to emulate the operation of a manual gearbox to provide a more engaging driving experience. With the H-pattern manual control mode, drivers can shift gears manually and provide a more interesting driving experience.
How Will A Manual Toyota Hybrid Work?
The manual transmission system that’ll be installed in Toyota Hybrid vehicles will be simulated using several components. The system will use a third pedal equipped with a “pedal reaction force generator” that applies force and vibrations to the driver’s foot to mimic the feeling of a partially disengaged clutch.
Similarly, the shifter will have a “reaction force actuator” that provides resistance while adjusting based on the shifter’s position and pseudo-clutch pedal. The powertrain control module will then use this information to vary the vehicle output based on the stimulated engine RPM displayed on a tachometer.
The electric motor will simulate the car stalling if the simulated RPM falls too low. This system will offer drivers a manual driving experience without requiring a traditional combustion engine.
Conclusion
The rise of automatic transmission has led to a serious decline in manual transmission vehicles. As such, most car owners today only learned to drive using automatic transmission vehicles. But Toyota’s manual transmission return will encourage many to learn how to drive using manual cars.
