Rotimi Amaechi’s Biography 

Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi was born in Ubima, Ikwerre LGA of Rivers State to his parents, Elder Fidelis Amaechi and Mary Amaechi. He was raised in the Diobu area of Port Harcourt. 

He obtained his first school leaving certificate at St. Theresa Primary School. He earned his WASSCE from Government Secondary School, Okolobiri in 1982. In 1987, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in English Studies and Literature from the University of Port Harcourt. 

He finished his National Youth Service in 1988 and joined a popular private health institution owned by Peter Odili, former Governor of River State. Subsequently, Peter Odili took Amaechi as his political son by helping him navigate Nigerian politics. 

Although Rotimi gives off lawyer tendencies, he’s never practised law. He is a deeply-rooted Catholic, a “Knight of the Order of Saint John,”  married to Judith Amaechi, and with three boys

Rotimi Amaechi’s Political Career 

Rotimi’s political career started when he emerged as the Secretary of the National Republican Convention in the Ikwerre Local Government of Rivers State during the transition of Nigeria into the Third Republic.

He was the Special Assistant to the Deputy Governor of Rivers State and mentor, Peter Odili from 1992-to 1994. Odili believed so much in Amaechi’s potential and took him under his wing and supervision. 

Amaechi became the State Secretary of the Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) in 1996, during the transition programme of General Sani Abacha. He contested for the Rivers State House of Assembly in 1999 and won. Later, he was elected as the Chairman of Nigeria’s Conference of Speakers of State Assemblies. 

During his time as the Speaker of the house, he used his jurisdiction smartly to work closely with Peter Odili to increase the beneficial relationship between the Executive and Legislative arms of government in Rivers State. Surprisingly, he launched a campaign against his political mentor, Odili, verbally attacking the image of the Governor in an effort to succeed Peter Odili as Governor in 2007. The plan worked out perfectly. 

Following all the issues that took place with his Governorship contest, he won and remained in office from 2007 to 2015. During his time, his administration focused mainly on infrastructural development, roads and bridges. 

In 2015, he left PDP, decamped to APC and was appointed Minister of Transportation under the Bridge regime. He spent a huge part of his appointment on reviving the Nigerian Railway Corporation, with the Lagos-Ibadan Train line being a headliner.
