On Thursday, 3rd June, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Adeoye Irelewuyi confirmed the fatal accident that took place at Upper Iweka Awka-Onitsha Expressway.
Confirming the accident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), he states that the accident involved four vehicles and it claimed the lives of a male driver and a female hawking sachet water.
Mr Irelewuyi noted that the accident occurred on Wednesday, 2nd June, in the evening, and it could be attributed to brake failure and loss of control.

“The fatal crash involved a Mercedes-Benz truck with registration number XJ444NSH, a Mercedes Benz 190 car with registration number HAL585RF, a Suzuki bus with registration number RLU799XC, and a Mitsubishi bus with registration number SSM892ZR.
“Eyewitness report indicates that the brake of the Mercedes Benz truck, fully loaded with tiles and other building materials failed, the driver lost control and rammed into three stationary vehicles and two pedestrians, and crashed.
“A total of four persons, three male adults and a female adult were involved in the crash.
“FRSC rescue team from Upper Iweka outpost Command rushed the victims to Toronto hospital, Onitsha, where a male adult and a female pedestrian were confirmed dead and their bodies deposited at the hospital morgue,” he said.
He also stated that efforts were being made to tow the truck to the Central Police station in Onitsha.
While sympathizing with the families of the deceased, the Commander urged drivers and motorists to ensure their vehicles met minimum safety standards before using it on the road.
