The rate of auto crashes currently ongoing in Lagos and other states are alarming. In late April, there was a multiple car crash at the Maryland–Ojota axis, with two lives lost.
Only a day into May, another accident occurred in Lagos state, which took a lot of lives as well. The accident happened at the Adekunle inter-change end of the Third Mainland Bridge.
The car crash occurred around 6 pm on Sunday, 1st May 2022. According to eyewitness information, a grey Toyota Hiace with registration number FST 241, YC coming from Adekunle inter-change towards Iyana-Okoro had a tire burst on top speed and somersaulted with 20 passengers (9 Male, 11 female).

Of the 20 passengers, 3(female) died on the spot, while five occupants only sustained injuries. The FRSC team noted that one other woman died at the General Hospital, Marina.
First responders at the accident scene were the FRSC, Nigerian Police, LASTMA, and LASEMA Rescue Unit. They rescued the injured victims while the corpses were taken to the General Hospital Marina.
The Sector Commander of FRSC notes that the accident could have been avoided if the tire wasn’t damaged and the driver wasn’t speeding through Third Mainland Bridge.
He warns drivers to check their car tires regularly and adhere to the Federal Road Safety Commission’s prescribed speed limits for all categories of the road at all times. He added, “Speed Thrills but Kills Faster.”
