Usually, your car’s AC system is supposed to make the atmosphere in your car cool, so that you don’t experience the hot weather outside and enjoy a comfortable ride. The car AC is able to create a cool ambience in your car through a circulating system that includes both a compressor and a condenser and relies on refrigerant, which absorbs heat. The most frequent reason an AC system begins to blow warm air is as a result of a low level of that refrigerant.  What do you do when this happens?

When you have a low level of refrigerant, the way out is to refill your car AC so that you enjoy that cool ambience again. This process is simple, and you will find out how to refill your car’s AC in the article on http://carmart.ng.

Refrigerant

The refrigerant that goes in automotive AC systems is called R134a, or 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane. It is a chemical gas that has a boiling point of 15 degrees Fahrenheit below zero. This boiling point rises, however, under pressure and condenses into a liquid. Older vehicle models from 1995 and below, on the other hand, use R12 as the original refrigerant.

Safety Precautions When Refill Your Car AC

Before getting started with refilling or recharging your AC with refrigerant; kindly take note of the following precautions:

  1. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes.
  2. Keep your skin away from the refrigerant since the chilling effect of spilled refrigerant may result in frostbite on uncovered skin

What You Need To Refill Your Car AC

The first thing you need to refill your car AC for ease’s sake is a flat surface- your garage or driveway will do when refilling your car AC with refrigerant.

Here are the part lists;

  • Can of refrigerant
  • Hose connector, if not included with refrigerant.
Why You Should Not Turn On Car AC Immediately After Entering Hot Car

Step By Step Guide To Refill Car AC

  1. Ensure your car is in park mode and put the parking brake on.
  2. Turn on your car’s AC to its coldest setting, increase the fan to its highest setting, and press the button to recirculate the air.
  3. Pop open the hood of your car, then find the AC low-pressure service port between the compressor and the evaporator, and remove the plastic cap. If you can’t locate this port, then you can use the connector piece from the refrigerant hose, as it will only fit on the low-pressure port.
  4. With the attachment hose disconnected from the can of refrigerant, connect the hose to the low-pressure point.
  5. With the compressor cycling, look at the included gauge and rotate the temperature dial to the current temperature.
  6. If the pressure reading is in the red portion of the gauge, this could be a sign of a bigger problem, possibly a faulty or malfunctioning compressor. In this case, do not refill your AC with a refrigerant.
  7. If the PSI reads lower than the designated “full” area on the gauge, it needs more refrigerant.
  8. Detach the hose from the service port.
  9. Remove the safety tab from the can of refrigerant, shake the can, and reattach the gauge and hose to the can.
  10. Connect the hose to the low-pressure service port and use the trigger to begin recharging the system with refrigerant. Rotate the can up and down to maintain good refrigerant flow.
  11. Use the built-in gauge to determine when the system is full.
  12. Pay careful attention to the built-in gauge so that you don’t over refill or overcharge your car’s AC.
  13. Once full, remove the connector from the port and dispose of the refrigerant can properly.

Price Of Car AC Gas Refill In Nigeria

As mentioned earlier, the refrigerant used in a car’s AC is R134a. In Nigeria, you can purchase your AC refrigerant at various automobile parts shops. The price of refrigerants in Nigeria ranges from N2,000- N5,500 per can depending on the brand and size you want

CONCLUSION

It’s not usual for your car’s AC system to need a refill of refrigerant. Once this happens, simply buy a gas refill (refrigerant) and follow the steps written in this article to get your AC functioning optimally again.
