The Lagos State Government estimates the population of Lagos to be between 17.5 million and 15.1 million as of the 2016 census, albeit this figure has been challenged by the Nigerian government and determined to be untrustworthy by the Nigerian National Population Commission.

It’s no surprise that these two states, out of the 36 in the country, have up to 50% more vehicles than the others. About 50 per cent of the 13 million vehicles on Nigerian roadways, or 6.5 million, are in Lagos and Kano states, the country’s two commercial nerve centres.

While Lagos is the country’s business hub, Kano State is the commercial heart of the country’s northern region.

During a courtesy visit by officials of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) to Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, in the state recently, the commissioner for insurance, Mr Sunday Thomas, said Kano was leading in many areas in the country, emphasizing that Kano and Lagos state alone account for nearly half of all vehicles on Nigerian roads.

While persuading the state government to collaborate with the insurance sector in order to ensure all automobiles in the state, he explained that this will have a substantial impact on the state’s Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) while also boosting revenue for all parties.

“The issue of fallen buildings has remained to be one of the concerns in our country’s big and significant cities that seems to have defied solutions and checks put in place by the authorities,” he stated.

“The commission is working with some federal agencies, such as the Fire Service and Police, as well as relevant professional associations, such as COREN, to ensure that the law’s provisions on public building insurance against third-party liability, as well as all buildings under construction with more than two stories, are strictly followed.”
