With the shift in demand toward crossover SUVs, Toyota has decided to invest in a full redesign of the Corolla for the 2020 model year, bringing an all-new platform, many standard advanced safety features, and even a new hybrid variant. Toyota redesigned the Corolla last year, giving this typically competent but dull small sedan a much-needed upgrade. The new Corolla gained a considerable amount of style without losing the high levels of comfort and efficiency it’s known for.
Changes are few for the 2021 Toyota Corolla. The biggest one is the new Apex Edition. This trim level’s upgraded suspension, as well as optional sticky summer performance tires, should liven up the Corolla’s handling. Overall, the Corolla is worth considering alongside other top-rated rivals such as the Honda Civic, Kia Forte, and Mazda 3.
2021 Toyota Corolla Test Drive Review
The 2020 Toyota Corolla comes in either sedan or hatchback form. The hatchback was new in 2019; the new sedan emerged for this model year. Dimensions have changed only modestly, but the new 2020 Corolla sedan is wider and longer, and all Corollas come with extensive safety technology.
Sedans come in L, LE, SE, XLE, and XSE trim levels, along with the new LE Hybrid. Hatchbacks come in SE and XSE guise. Sportier SE and XSE sedans are fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels, a chin spoiler, and aero-stabilizing fins.
Three distinct powertrains are now available. All Corolla hatchbacks are powered by the 2.0-litre inline-4, which makes 169 horsepower and 159 pound-feet of torque. Either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) may be installed. The CVT incorporates a “launch” ratio for quicker take-offs. SE and XSE sedans also get the 2.0-litre engine. Ford Focus and Chevrolet seem to be the major competitors slated to be discontinued as manufacturers take firm steps to build models consumers are buying in greater numbers.
Will fewer competitors and a redesign create a situation in which the Corolla can excel and shed the perception of being one of the least-exciting choices in its segment? That remains to be seen.

Inside, the 2021 Toyota Corolla has a streamlined dashboard and soft-touch materials. Every model of this new 2021 Toyota Corolla has a passive entry and push-button start, but certain Corollas can be upgraded with ambient interior lighting, dual-zone climate control, and heated front seats.
Those who regularly have back-seat passengers should consider the sedan over the hatchback since it has considerably more legroom behind the front seats. The 2021 Toyota Corolla has 18 cubic feet of cargo space behind its back seat, but we only fit two carry-on bags back there. However, the new no-cost Enhanced Cargo Space option expands that area by 6 cubic feet (23 total) by replacing the spare tire with a tire repair kit. While the sedan only has 13 cubes of trunk volume, we squeezed eight bags inside.
Both body styles had inferior interior cubby storage compared with capacious rivals such as the Honda Civic. Thankfully, there’s a convenient tray at the front of their centre console and a useful bin below the armrest.
