For 2020, Mercedes has added a bit more power to the base E 350 (formerly the E 300). You also get a few more standard features that used to be optional. Otherwise, the E-Class returns mostly unchanged, which is a good thing. We continue to praise its refined interior that is as comfortable as it is attractive. There is also a long list of customization options to set yours apart from the rest. And we’re fans of the way Mercedes blends the classic luxury aesthetic with all of the latest tech offerings.

The 2020 Mercedes E-Class sedan gets a 14-horsepower bump for its base engine. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder now produces 255 horsepower. That upgrade results in the model designation changing from E 300 to E 350 (Mercedes numbers long ago stopped aligning with engine displacement). Additionally, every model now comes standard with blind-spot warning and proximity entry with push-button start. The last minor change is the addition of the Premium package being included as standard in the coupe and convertible E-Classes.

2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class models

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a midsize luxury vehicle that comes in four body styles: a five-passenger sedan, a seven-passenger (thanks to a fold-down, rear-facing third row) wagon, and a four-passenger coupe and convertible.

The sedan, coupe, and convertible all come standard with rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive (dubbed 4Matic) either optional or standard, depending on the engine and body style. The four basic trim levels are tied to different powertrains: E 350 (sedan only), E 450 (sedan, wagon, coupe, convertible), AMG E 53 (sedan, coupe, convertible), and AMG E 63 S (sedan and wagon).

Standard equipment for the E 350 sedan includes a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (255 horsepower, 273 lb-ft of torque), a nine-speed automatic transmission, an adaptive suspension, LED headlights, auto-dimming mirrors, a sunroof, simulated leather upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats. You also get a 12.3-inch central display screen, a navigation system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, and advanced safety features that include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.

The E 450 has all of the E 350’s equipment plus a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine (362 hp, 369 lb-ft). From here, you can get more luxury-oriented features as part of the Convenience and Premium packages. For more power and some upgraded equipment, there’s the AMG E 53, which comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine (429 hp, 384 lb-ft). The AMG E 53 also pads on AMG-developed or -tuned powertrain and suspension components.

At the top of the horsepower, the heap is the AMG E 63 S. It gets the E 53’s equipment plus a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 (603 hp, 627 lb-ft), additional performance upgrades and more standard features.

2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Interior

Mercedes-Benz is safely in the first place when it comes to German luxury car interiors, and the E-Class is no exception. The general design is consistent across all versions of the E-Class, so far as the dash layout is concerned. It flows from one side to the other with elegant lines and beautiful flourishes. Materials are all top of the class and feel like a genuine luxury when you start moving your hand around the various surfaces. Good luck customizing the interior to the exact way you’d like, as the upholstery and trim options never seem to end. You can choose traditional leather colors and patterns or go with bright and vibrant accents. The options change depending on what level of performance E-Class you bought, giving way to even more customization options. So long as you actually like the basic design of the interior, we’re almost certain that you can find a spec to fall in love with.

Sliding into the driver’s seat of the E-class, one would be forgiven for thinking it was an S-class. The cabin is beautifully detailed with brushed aluminum, lovely wood, and some of the most comfortable seats we’ve ever tested. An optional fragrance diffuser fills the air with the scent of your choice. The more smell-averse among our staff found it to be overpowering even at its lowest setting, but others preferred it versus the usual new-car smell.

Performance and fuel economy?

Here’s where things get complicated due to the huge number of powertrains and levels of performance. A base E 350 Sedan comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 255 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque. This engine, along with all the others we’re going to go through, uses various versions of nine-speed automatic transmissions. It managed 26 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive or 25 mpg combined with all-wheel drive.

The E 450 is an upgrade for the sedan and the point of entry for the Coupe, Cabriolet, and Wagon. All have a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that makes 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The convertible and wagon net 22 mpg combined, while the sedan and coupe get slightly better at 23 mpg combined.

Next up is the AMG 53 range. Available as the Sedan, Coupe, and Cabriolet, all use the same 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six augmented by Mercedes’ EQ Boost mild-hybrid technology. These cars all make 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. The sedan gets the best fuel economy at 24 mpg combined, whereas the convertible and coupe both get 23 mpg combined. Thank the mild-hybrid tech for those higher numbers than the E 450’s. The E53 line of E-Classes will hit 60 mph in about 4.4 seconds.
